Here, Snake is introduced to Granin – a scientist who was working with Sokolov on the Shagohod. After exchanging a few bullets where both of them make it alive, Snake meets his first major adversary from the Cobra Unit – an incredibly feared group of soldiers who work under The Boss and have been credited with helping end World War II.Īfter taking on the Cobra Unit’s first soldier, The Pain, Snake is able to make his way through some swamps and into another research facility named the Granin Design Bureau. Snake then meets up with one of the two contacts he was supposed to rendezvous with – Eva (the other one being Adam). During the rather taxing Operation Snake Eater, Snake goes through hell in his attempts to get once more rescue Sokolov while at the same time dealing with Volgin’s soldiers as well as the soldiers of a young GRU commander – Ocelot. Just a few days later, after recuperating from his injuries, Snake is sent out into the tropical jungles of Russia once more to put an end to Volgin’s machinations and to kill his mentor – The Boss. This, combined with Snake’s methodical ass kicking at the hands of The Boss, essentially puts him in the hospital, America in deep trouble with Russia, and Sokolov in Volgin’s hands. Unexpectedly, Volgin decides to use the American nuke to destroy a Russian research facility, making it look like an American attack.

Sadly, the mission is a failure, as when he was escorting Sokolov to the extraction point, he is confronted by Colonel Volgin – head of the GRU forces – and The Boss, who seems to have defected to Volgin’s side and has given him a portable nuke. Sokolov, who wants to defect to the US after being forced to create the Shagohod – a large battle tank capable of launching nuclear missiles from any terrain unassisted (it is essentially the proto-Metal Gear). Not too much is known about the details of her mission, but she plays an important role for our plucking protagonist and her stalwart pupil – Naked Snake.ĭuring The Boss’s own mission, Snake is sent to Russia as well, but with a much simpler mission: to retrieve Dr. She is sent on a mission to collect the Philosopher’s Legacy (a massive store of wealth left behind by a group of nations before World War II) from Russia. The United States has an incredibly skilled soldier who is renowned and feared on the battlefield by friend and foe alike, named The Boss. Let’s start at the very beginning with the first chronological game of the franchise: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. However, I must warn you that something might invariably slip through the cracks, so don’t sharpen those pitchforks the moment you notice that I have spoiled something you wanted to figure out for yourself. For those who plan on playing some of the other games, I can’t promise a complete lack of spoilers from earlier games (Metal Gear Solid 3, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes), but I will keep the spoilers from chronologically later games (Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4) to a minimum. Sadly, thanks to Kojima’s flair for theatrics, the Metal Gear universe is pretty convoluted and even the most die-hard fans (like me) often have to visit a bunch of different wikis and discussion boards to figure out just what the hell is happening.īecause of this, I thought this is the perfect use for the rather large amounts of (useless in the real world) information I have amassed about the series, and use to help introduce newer players to the messed up and confusing world of Metal Gear Solid. Because of the game’s massive popularity, it is introducing a whole new generation of gamers to the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has shaped up to be possibly the biggest release of the franchise, owing in no small part to the massive marketing and hype machine created by Konami and the rather public drama unfolding between gamers all over the world between Konami and series-creator Hideo Kojima.
